Elena Kazamia
Elena is a writer from Athens in Greece. She writes about nature and science with rigorous scholarship, lyrical prose and a deep curiosity about the interconnectedness of life.
She received her PhD from the University of Cambridge where she studied algae – both in their natural environment and for use in biotechnology. After receiving her doctorate she was elected to a research fellowship at Corpus Christi College. She has conducted research at Stanford (on barnacles), MIT & Harvard Medical School (on cyanobacteria) and the École Normale Supérieure in Paris (on diatoms).
Elena is writing her first book of non-fiction, on algae and symbiosis for which she is represented by Jessica Woollard at David Higham Associates.
Elena freelances as a science journalist and is a regular contributor to Nautilus magazine. Here she writes about a wide variety of subjects, including the intersection between science and art, conservation and expedition science, discoveries in molecular sciences, bioethics, anthropology and AI.
She lives in San Diego with her husband, their young daughter, and a wild furry companion, who occasionally responds to ‘Sky’ when not distracted by chasing birds into the sunset.
Elena is available for speaking engagements on all the subjects she writes about.
